When I see guys well dressed asking for money at the bus-stop, I always ignore because I wonder why they have no shame standing and begging for money. I’ve never considered the fact they misplaced their purse or wallet, or they run out of money. This is not entirely my fault, because there have been several stories of people well dressed begging for money everywhere with fake sob stories.
My own corporate beggar story was very funny. I closed from work last Friday and was rushing home, because I wanted to beat traffic a little. As I was rushing from work and saying my goodbyes, I didn’t know I had my left my purse at work.
The woman selling snacks in front of my office was supposed to give me #300, that should have been my saving grace but I don’t know who I offended that wanted to punish me like that o. After collecting the #300 balance, I saw fresh bananas right because the woman selling snacks. I bought bananas for #150 and groundnut #50, so I was left with #100.
Normally, I take two buses from work to my house and one bike which is optional (compulsory for me), because the distance from the bus-stop is not so much. The first bus is #100, so when I boarded the bus, I used the #100 balance to pay. If that woman had not given me the money, I would have known that I wasn’t with my phone.
As I got to the second bus which was #200, I balanced properly to start eating my banana and groundnut. There is this lady I have never talked to in the bus, but we are mostly always in the same bus when going home. You know those people you see in your street, your workplace, or even at the bus-stop, you just know each other but you have never talked with each other.
If I was not eating banana and groundnut, it would have been better because people might understand that I don’t have money. When the conductor started asking for money, I just confidently opened my bag and my purse wasn’t even there, that was when I knew I was in trouble. I ransacked my bag, hoping for one #200 to just drop miraculously, nothing happened o.
By the time I had finished ransacking, I was the only one left in the bus that had not paid. I was so confused and scared, and I don’t like when people talk to me rudely. The conductor was already shouting, and I know I needed to do something fast.
I remembered the lady that we always say and never talked, so I decided to ask her for the money and I’ll give it to her back anytime we saw again. She wasn’t sitting close to me, so I needed to talk loudly for her to hear, almost everybody could hear me also. That was, and is still the most humiliating time of my life, because everybody in the bus was still looking at me.
She was kind enough to pay for me, and people were looking at me in a disgusting kind of way. I didn’t even mind again, at least I have paid. I offered the lady my remaining bananas and groundnut, she collected and some other people in the bus took some too. After five to ten minutes, nobody was talking about it again, but it will live with me for the rest of my life. It was my corporate beggar experience.
