I’ll share a story first before we delve into the topic properly. There is this guy, he is a salary worker but he also has a side hustle for extra cash. So, he made a hit with his side hustle and there was a lot of money. I was expecting him to invest in his side hustle since he had the money to turn the business around, what this guy did shocked me to my bone marrow. He went to buy one expensive Rolex wristwatch, an iPhone 7 (that was what reigning at that time), he sold his car, added money to it and bought a very nice car. By the time he had bought all these, almost all the money was gone.
I was like what kind of a person does this? he just told me WE HAVE TO FAKE IT UNTIL WE MAKE IT. What this guy did actually changed his business for good, he started having a lot of rich customers. He said when he goes for a meeting with his clients, he’ll make sure his Rolex watch was showing, he’ll also drop his phone and his car key on the table noisily for attention, he also uses this really expensive perfume, so when this client sees all these, they know he is not cheap and they will most likely pay what he ask them to, or just reduce it a little. It was not as if he had money at that time o.
The truth is I think we all have different perspectives to the cliche “FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT”. I don’t even know if faking it till you make it is something we are supposed to do, and if we are supposed to fake it till we make it, when are we supposed to stop faking it? What is faking it till I make it?
If I am in a relationship where I always have fights with my partner, and we do not see eye to eye, but we snap nice pictures, put it on social media with a heart-warming caption, am I faking it till I make it? I’m not supposed to announce we are fighting, right? When I am talking about my achievements with my friends, and I know my business isn’t doing so well and I just say all is fine and well with the business, am I also faking it till I make it?
Mostly everyone had done this before, whether we think it’s right or wrong. I heard one recently too, FAITH IT TILL YOU MAKE IT. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Fake is something not genuine, a forgery or a sham. So, are we faithing it or faking it?
Maybe when I get answers and clarification, I’ll come back here to discuss it. A quick one, if I am smiling when I am hurting real down and everyone thinks I am happy, am I faking it till I make it? Making it here is probably when I have a genuine reason to smile. Before anyone will blame it on social media, these things have been there before social media, social media just made it very obvious.
